Limits on Anabolic Steroid Use in Horse Racing

Posted on September 30, 2007

Kentucky Horse FarmsThe Indiana Horse Racing Commission has imposed a limit on certain steroids on days that horses race. It doesn’t make anabolic steroids illegal, but it does regulate their use. This new rule is to ensure that no horse has an unfair advantage over its competitors while allowing the drugs to be used for therapy for horses that may benefit from the use of this drug.

This rule takes effect January 1, 2008 and be implemented on the first race in Indiana on April 1, 2008. And a 45 day grace period will be in effect before enforcement begins after the first day of racing. Putting the new rule essentially into effect in the middle of May 2008.

Most states that have horse farms, racing, etc are implementing some sort of policy to help regulate the anabolic steroids and their use. Currently, the use of steroids in Iowa is virtually unregulated.

On the Kentucky side of things, the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council has urged much tougher restrictions on steroids, but wants more testing and research before putting a proposal for the various drug’s use into place. Once they have done adequate testing and research, it is expected a similar policy will be adopted for KY. This Council makes recommendations to the Kentucky Horse Race Authority which administers the various horse racing events in Kentucky. Hopefully something will get into place sooner rather than later as while there are legitimate uses for the drugs, there can be too many people desperate to do whatever it takes to win, and do so at the expense of their horses.

Yes, many thoroughbreds have been using them for some time. Anabolic Steroids are the drugs in question.
But, it appears that is starting to disappear collectively from all sporting events – including horse racing.
