Kentucky Horse Barns

Kentucky Horse BarnsOne of the first questions you need to ask when you are getting ready to build, which material are you going to use:  wood or metal?

There are a lot of pros/cons for each and I’m going to touch on them briefly.  Wood can be more architecturally appealing as the variety of detailing or customization that can be done is virtually limitless.  There is however the potential for more upkeep as staining/sealing the barn needs to be done on a regular basis.  Another concern is pests - carpenter bees are notorious for boring holes in the structure.

Metal on the other hand can be had in a variety of colors, and generally requires less maintenance than its wood counterpart.  But, there is simply less detailing that can be done easily with the material.  You do have less pest issues generally speaking than with a wood structure.  Though, in all likelihood, you will still have to deal with carpenter bees to at least some degree as your frame for your metal sided barn is probably going to be wood.

As I’m sure our readers are aware, we chose metal for our horse barn / home, and are quite content with our choice.  We’ve been living in our place for going on 2 years now, and outside maintenance barn-wise, has been zero.

Ultimately, it probably comes down to personal preference.  If you really like wood, and are willing to do the maintenance on it thats required occasionally,  it can be a beautiful addition to any horse farm in Kentucky.  If you want to minimize maintenance, metal can also be an attractive solution if its designed properly.
