Lexington Kentucky Farms BarnsThere was a good article in the Louisville Kentucky newspaper, The Courier-Journal that I’d like to share:

There will be a Kentucky Horse Farms and Barns Tour this coming Saturday October 13 2007 in Lexington Kentucky. The tour is open to the public and will concentrate on Kentucky farms and barns in Washington, Boyle, Mercer, and Marion County with a visit to the Shaker village at Pleasant Hill and other locations where historic barns can be seen to view their unique and interesting architecture.

Barn preservation is becoming more of a hot topic as of late in Kentucky. They are part of our history, and preserving them for future generations is becoming more important to everyone.

The National Barn Alliance has been invited to hold its 2009 annual meeting in Kentucky.

Stops planned for the tour include Parker’s Landing, Hamilton Farm in Washington County, the Campbell Farm in Springfield, the Kirkland Farm at Gravel Switch, and the Helm-Gentry Cottage & Farm near DanvilleKentucky.

Part of the tour will include discussion about rehabilitation and finding new uses for barns that aren’t used anymore since the tobacco industry has slowed quite a bit in recent years. Some revitalized and new uses include housing, meeting halls, office space, shop, as well as showrooms.

The Rural Heritage Development Initiative is a new project that focuses on rural preservation and economic development strategies. It is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in partnership with Preservation Kentucky Inc. and the Kentucky Heritage Council.

Tickets for this Saturday’s October 13 2007 barn tour are $35.00. It includes transportation, lunch, snacks, information packets, souvenirs, and a 1 year membership in Preservation Kentucky.
