Kentucky National Horse Show in Lexington Kentucky 2007
Posted on October 4, 2007
I recently read an unfortunate bit of news from a press release from the United States Equestrian Federation. While at the Kentucky National Horse Show in Lexington Kentucky on September 28 2007, Niall Grimes had a heart attack due to an arterial blockage. He was standing near the ring that was located closest to the EMTs - which was fortunate as they were able to render assistance very quickly. The EMTs were able to revive him twice within 45 minutes. He was then rushed to the Georgetown Medical Center, where he was stabilized and then moved to St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was given a stint to open the blocked artery. This gave hope and optimism for a recovery. He was able to survive for the next 4 days with mechanical and chemical assistance.
Unfortunately, when life support was removed, he wasn’t able to continue on his own efforts and died in the afternoon on October 3rd 2007. Niall Grimes was born in 1976, and although he was young at age 31 when he passed, he touched many persons with his enthusiasm and kindness.
A memorial prayer service will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home at their main street parlor in Lexington Kentucky on October 4th at 12:00 pm.
The family requests donations be made to the St. Joseph Coronary Care Unit in lieu of flowers.
While it is unknown if Niall’s medical problem could have been detected, this serves as a good reminder to everyone to see their physician regularly for medical checkups. Just because you are young and feel good, doesn’t mean that there isn’t something lurking in wait that needs to be identified and treated.
A lot of horse enthusiasts and competitors can often times make sure their horse has the best of medical care - but are lacking for their well being. If you are going to compete in horse competitions, you should make sure that are in good physical condition to do so.
