Arsonist targets Shelbyville Kentucky Hay
Posted on September 23, 2007
There was a recent article in the Shelbyville Kentucky newspaper the Sentinel News about a rash of hay fires that are “suspicious”. One fire a week, for the past six weeks has raised concerns that an arsonist is going around and setting fire to farmers hay in their fields.
The fires have started in their fields, or rolled hay and then spread to other areas. The fires have been within a 3 mile radius by Stoney Point Road, Mulberry Pike and Narrow Gage Road, so that narrows things down quite a bit. A house burned down along the Shelby County and Henry County line as a result of these fires.
Fortunately, its not near our horse farm - but, you never know. They could decide to relocate based on the newspaper article, so we are keeping an eye out for any suspicious persons in our area.
Its quite bad timing for the local market as hay stocks are already quite low, and the drought/hot weather has significantly stunted the second cutting of hay that was sorely needs this season. (For our place, its unlikely we are even going to get a second cutting of hay and we’ve actually gotten a little rain here and there, where other areas in Shelby County haven’t had any. For reference, we got THREE full cuttings of hay last year. And dwindling that down to one shows the impact that the hot weather/drought/early frost has had on it.)
You can expect it to add more to the cost of hay in the Shelbyville Kentucky area thats for sure, which is quite unfortunate. Hopefully the police can catch this person before they do any more damage. If you haven’t already, NOW is a good time to stock up on hay. Expect prices to jump as winter gets closer. Forecasts are saying that this summer has been quite similar to the 1977, and that we can expect a similar winter like they had in 1978. And if you recall, 1978 was record setting blizzards that paralyzed the city. Get your hay now. You may not be able to get it later without paying a huge premium.
