Shelbyville Kentucky Orchestra

Shelbyville Kentucky OrchestraI wanted to write about a bit of community news that I read in the Shelbyville Kentucky newspaper The Sentinel-News today.  Shelbyville Kentucky has a now recently formed orchestra.  Headed by Mary McGillen, she is now searching for local musicians to fill some needed vacancies for the group.  She is particularly looking for flute players, trumpeters, and percussionists.

No show dates have been scheduled, nor has the group even been named at this point.  Current members of the Shelbyville Kentucky orchestra range in age from 11 to 55.  The group is currently rehearsing for its Christmas and holiday scores for the upcoming season.  They currently have approximately 20 musicians for the group.  Instruments that they currently have within the group include:  harp, strings, oboe, several clarinets, horns, a trumpet, and a trombone.  They have currently practiced 2 times thus far since their formation.
Practices are held every other Tuesday from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the First Baptist Church in Shelbyville.  The next scheduled practice is this Tuesday October 16.

The orchestra formation was inspired by the Shelby County Community Theatre production of “Fiddler On The Roof”.  The musical featured several local musicians, and after the performance, the musicians wanted to continue with their music producing efforts.

If you have been wanting to play your old instruments, and been looking for a good reason to do so – this is an excellent opportunity to do what you enjoy, and give back to the community at the same time.  If you would like to join, or desire additional information, please contact Mary McGillen at (502) 655-0140.
